Steel pipe Solutions is one of the prominent supplier and trader for Alloy 904L Pipes, where the aluminium addition allows for the formation of a continuous homogenous self-repairing subscale. These Stainless Steel 904L Seamless Pipes may be hot-worked in the temperature range 1200 Degree C to 900 Degree C (2190 Degree F to 1650 Degree F), followed by water quenching or rapid air cool. As with our Stainless Steel 904L Welded Pipes, do not attempt to form in the 600 Degree C – 800 Degree C (1100 Degree F – 1500 Degree F) temperature range. Do not heat these Stainless Steel 904L EFW Pipes, or any other alloy, with a torch to bend it, because the lack of temperature control will often result in cracking. Chromium (25 %) supplemented with aluminium (2.2 %) and micro – alloying addition (0.1 %) yttrium in our Stainless Steel 904L ERW Pipes form a very thin protective oxide scale. The addition of yttrium in these Stainless Steel 904L Round Pipes improves the adhesion and spalling resistance of the chromium and aluminium oxide scales. For heavier joints in our Stainless Steel 904L Square Pipes, it is recommended to use gas from Air Gas which was designed to reduce the likelihood of weld solidification cracks. For GTAW welding of these Stainless Steel 904L Rectangular Pipes, the use of Argon and Nitrogen for the shielding gas is suggested to minimize the likelihood of weld solidification cracking.

UNS NO8904, commonly known as 904L stainless steel, is a low carbon austenitic nickel-chromium stainless steel with additions of molybdenum and copper.  904L pipes, 904L sheets and plates and other 904L product forms products are mainly used where the corrosion resistant properties of 316L and 317L are inadequate, especially in severe corrosive conditions.

Due to the combination of high contents of chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper, stainless steel 904L exhibits greater resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion and to general corrosion in reducing acids.

When compared to 2205 grade duplex stainless steel, 904L has similar corrosion resistant properties but lower mechanical strength. 2205 is also a lower cost option compared to 904L, but is not suitable for temperatures above 300°C. Overall among the three grades i.e. 904L, 316L and 2205, 316L stainless steel is the lowest cost option, but offers comparatively lower corrosion resistance.
